What to Look For in Wading Pants

One of the first things that you should do when faced with a list of great wading pants is to recognize the features they have. By doing so, you do not only pick the right set of wading pants for you, but you also ensure yourself that you buy the most efficient one based on your preferences. With this in mind, you should consider what an ideal set of wading pants must be. Here are some of the features that you have a look into when picking for the best wading pants.

Material of the Wading Pants

The primary feature that you should consider when picking the best wading pants is the material used. Consider the breathability of the material. This means that the material is thin enough to allow water and heat to leave away from your body through the fabric. Breathable material is essential especially when you are moving around a lot on hot days. Typical materials which make up wading plants include neoprene, treated canvas, and rubber. If you spend much time wading in water, we suggest you pick wading pants that are made of neoprene.

Neoprene

Neoprene waders are typically used for cold water since neoprene is a great insulator. Neoprene waders typically run from 3mm thick, for warmer weather, to 5mm thick, for cold weather.

The main problem with neoprene materials is that it is not breathable. Neoprene waders can become quite uncomfortable in warm weather which is where breathable waders come into play.

Breathable Materials

If you are going to be fishing in warmer weather, you will probably want waders made from breathable materials. Thanks to technological advancements, there are many breathable materials that exist for waders, but the most common one is Gore-Tex. These materials keep the water out, but still let air in so that you don’t sweat as much during warm weather. If you are going to be fishing in the spring, summer, or fall, we recommend buying breathable waders for the most comfort.

Sizing of the Wading Pants

Another thing that you should look for is the sizing of the wading pants. Usually, the size of the wading pants would correspond to a comfortable use. If you buy a pair of pants that are too large would only cause wear and tear. On the other hand, wading pants that are too small will cause possible tear at the crotch and seams area. So, before buying any of the best wading pants, we recommend that you know your shoe size, your inseam in inches, and your largest girth around in inches.

Stockingfoot Booties

Most of the waders on this list come with stockingfoot booties (also known as stockingfoot waders or bootfoot waders) – that is boots or “stockings” that are connected to the wading pants themselves so that the wading pants are waterproof. There are wading pants that don’t come with boots, but you will need another waterproofing solution (such as neoprene undergarments) that has booties if you don’t intend to get wet.

Types of Waders

There are a few types of fishing waders that you need to be aware of. They are suited for different depths of water and different types of fishing. There are two main types of fishing waders: chest waders and hip waders.

Chest Waders

Chest waders are waders that cover from the foot to the chest as the name implies. This provides full-body protection. There are two types of chest waders that differ on whether the boot is attached (bootfoot waders) and not attached (stockingfoot waders).

Bootfoot Waders

Bootfoot waders are chest waders where the fishing boot is affixed to the bottom of the waders in one piece. They are extremely convenient since there is no additional boot that you need to put on and tie. Bootfoots are generally warmer than stockingfoot since there is no restricted circulation at the ankle from laces. Additionally, for those of us who are less flexible, bootfoots don’t require you to bend over to put any boots on.

Bootfoot waders are also the best waders for surfcasting since they don’t let sand or pebbles into them.

The main problem with bootfoot waders is that if there is any issue with the boot part of the wader, it is difficult to fix them unless you buy a new pair of waders. Luckily if you buy a high-quality pair of waders this won’t be an issue.

Stockingfoot Waders

The other kind of chest waders is stockingfoot waders. These waders are similar to the bootfoot waders in that they cover from the feet to the chest, but they do not come with built-in boots. You will need to buy fishing boots and neoprene socks separately.

Hip Waders/Wading Pants

As the name implies, hip waders cover up to the hips. Some come with built-in boots, but most do not. They are intended for shallow water where a chest wader would be unnecessary or uncomfortable.

Wading pants are similar to hip waders, but fit more like pants than waders. They are great if you are fishing in shallow water and want to look more stylish than you would with waders. They are also quite light for hot weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Best Fishing Wading Pants Brands?

We highly recommend the brands covered on this list and a few others:

  • Fishingsir
  • 8 Fans
  • Compass 360
  • Patagonia
  • TideWe
  • Chota
  • Frogg Toggs

Do You Need Fishing Waders?

Good quality fishing waders can be quite expensive. If you’re just starting out they may seem like an unnecessary accessory. However, you shouldn’t discount them immediately. For some fishing, such as fly fishing, they are almost mandatory, but they can also change any ordinary fishing experience. They provide you with more freedom about when and where you are able to fish.

If you are fly fishing, especially if you are a beginner fly fisher, the answer is most likely yes. This is because the nature of casting a fly generally requires that you are actually in the water. Waders fit comfortably under your fly fishing vest.

If you are not fly fishing, then the answer depends. Owning waders opens up the possibilities you have when fishing. You can fish in colder and deeper waters because of the additional protection the waders provide.

There are a few situations where you DO NOT need fishing waders which include:

  • Warm weather + warm water: If it’s warm outside, you probably don’t need waders unless you want additional protection around your legs from leeches or rocks. You can probably get away with just shorts or rolled up pants. In warmer weather, going “wader free” is generally the preferred method of fishing since you get to experience the same environment that the fish are experiencing and it is more comfortable.
  • Warm weather + cold water: Another time you can probably go wader free is when the weather is still warm, but the water is cold. As long as the water is shallow, you can probably get away with a good pair of fishing boots and neoprene socks, which are designed for cold water.
  • Float fishing: If you are planning to fish from a boat or from shore, you won’t need waders. However, you should remember that if you ever do want to venture into the water, you will need to buy a pair of waders eventually.

Conclusion

Consider each of the best wading pants which we have discussed above. Look into their similarities and differences. Look into the features that would suit your preferences. In addition to this, you should note of the model which would fit your budget and your style of fishing. By doing so, you will assure yourself of a successful fishing activity that is devoid of any mistake. Take note of the fact that your success as a fisher does not only depend on your skills and abilities. Your chosen gears could affect it as well.

What is a Golden Tilefish?

A golden tilefish is a medium-small deepwater perciform closely related to a perch. It is part of the Malacanthidae family, known for its thin, flexible spines on its dorsal fins.

Some anglers refer to this fish as golden bass, great northern tilefish, rainbow tilefish, and golden Snapper.

What Does A Golden Tilefish Look Like?

Golden tilefish is often called the “clowns of the sea” due to their bright colors. Their backs are usually a shiny blue or blue-green with a smattering of brilliant yellow and golden spots all over their body. There are also blue patches beneath their eyes. The scales of their stomach are white, while their head takes on a rose-pink tint.

You can also distinguish this species of tilefish from others by its large crest-like fin on top of its head. They have sepia-colored pectoral fins as well as a purplish-blue anal fin.

In terms of weight and size, females are smaller than males. However, they can live up to 46 years!

Where Are Tilefish Caught?

You’ll discover that tilefish prefer deeper waters and often occupy a wide range of depths from 250 to 1,500 feet. You’ll often find tilefish in deep canyons that offer vertical burrows. You’ll notice they favor areas with rocks and boulders too.

They hide in sand or mud within their chosen burrows to ambush prey and hide from their natural predators. They are often preyed upon by monkfish, sand and dusky sharks, conger eels, and spiny dogfish.

The golden tilefish spans the entire east coast of the U.S. all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and Venezuela. However, you can find the densest populations in the northeastern waters off Massachusetts and New Jersey coasts, specifically around Nantucket Island and Cape May.

Fun Fact: NOAA Fisheries mandates management measures like annual catch limits of tilefish fisheries.

What Do They Eat?

Tilefish are bottom feeders. Typically, this species feeds during the day and primarily consumes a variety of crustaceans like clams, crabs, and shrimp. They also feed on snails, sea cucumbers, worms, mollusks, urchins, and even anemones.

When Is the Spawning Season of Golden Tilefish?

Their spawning season differs depending on the waters they are found in. Golden tilefish of the Atlantic spawn in March through to November, and Mid-Atlantic populations reach peak spawning in June.

The Gulf of Mexico population peaks spawning in January and continues through June, while the South Atlantic ones take place from April to June.

Fun Fact: When Golden Tilefish spawn, females release an astonishing number of eggs ranging from 2 to 8 million!

FAQs

Can You Catch Tilefish in Florida?

Yes, you can catch tilefish in Florida. In fact, it is quite popular to go fishing for this species around Miami and other parts of south Florida. However, the tilefish caught in Florida waters are smaller than those in the mid-Atlantic.

You can take a charter boat or hire a fishing guide to target golden tilefish.

What Does Golden Tilefish Taste Like?

Tilefish are a popular table food used in many seafood dishes, but sushi is one of the most common. They have a flavor reminiscent of crab or lobster, and the meat goes from a light pink to a flaky white once cooked. You can prepare this fish with lemon, garlic, salt, pepper, and butter and fry it in a pan.

What Is the Best Bait for Golden Tilefish?

The best bait you should use when golden tilefish fishing is live bait. This can include whole bait or cut bait. Popular cut bait would be Bonito strips, Barracuda strips, or fish chunks. Squid and sea claims are also great because these are naturally part of their diet.

The End of the Line

Golden tilefish is an incredibly unique fish whose conservation is important for the recreational fishery, food industry, and biodiversity. They are long-lived deepwater fish that many anglers target to admire their beauty, flavor, and challenge. Next time you plan a vacation to Florida, you can book a fishing charter and try catching these incredible “clowns of the sea” for yourself!

Crappie Jigs: What Colors and Jig Heads to Use

Crappie jigs are a staple for many crappie fishing anglers. Some even say it’s the best crappie lure for shallow water panfish fishing. Read on for more tips and recommendations on crappie jig colors and heads.

Best Crappie Jig Types

Picture showing the different crappie jig styles

Jigs are a must-have while going crappie fishing. Not only do they work great in different fishing conditions, but they are also cheap and easy to use. There are also many types, shapes, and colors to choose from, so you can experiment with what works for you.

Tube

Strike King Mr. Crappie Tube/Red-Chartreuse Sparkle (MRCT2-187)

See on Amazon

Tubes are typically 1.5 to 2 inches long with a hollow body and cut tassels. Its tail moves independently in the water, making it an excellent choice for vertical jigging and casting. However, there are many variations – some have a less pronounced tail, while others have layered pours.

Regarding availability, you can get them in bulk (typically packs of 50) and pre-rigged. Color-wise, there are plain, two-color combos or with glitters.

Curly Tail Grub

Bobby Garland Hyper Grub Curly-Tail Swim-Bait Crappie Fishing Lure, Accessories for Freshwater Fishing, 2', Pack of 18, Smoke Silver

See on Amazon

Its tail is the most distinctive physical feature of a curly tail grub jig. Unlike tube jigs, they are not recommended for vertical jigging because it needs steady horizontal movement. However, you can use this crappie jig type for casting.

Shad Body

Bobby Garland Baby Shad Crappie Baits-Pack of 18 (2-Inch, Gold/White), Model: BS143

See on Amazon

If you want a triple-threat jig, get the shad body. It works exceptionally well for casting, vertical jigging, and even shooting. Plus, it is not picky with the jighead you attach. In terms of appearance, it has a thin spear tail.

Paddle Tail

Strike King Mr Crappie Slabalicious Electric Chicken (MRCSLC-60)

See on Amazon

Unlike the previous jigs, it has a paddle at the end of its tail. This feature gives the tail a subtle kick. It is not as pronounced, but it does catch the attention of crappies. For crappie fishing success, we suggest using a paddle tail jig only for casting. Then, once you have attracted some crappies, switch to a shad body jig.

Spade Tail

Charlie's Worms Artificial Fishing Bait Spade Tail Grub, Freshwater Saltwater Bass Fishing Lures Scented Soft Baits 12pk (Pink and White)

See on Amazon

At the end of a spade tail jig is a flat tail, which can be forked, straight, or split. Like a shad body, it performs great for casting, shooting, and vertical jigging. The only difference is that a spade tail’s body is girthier or bulkier.

Best Colors in Crappie Fishing

Contrary to common belief, crappies are not blind. In fact, they have good eyesight and see color. Manufacturers make jigs in different colors due to the fishing condition, particularly the water’s depth, clarity, and temperature. Light is also a determining factor in how well they can see.

Crappie Jig Color for Clear Water

Crappie jigs that are light in color and mimic the natural patterns of baitfish are the best. Some anglers even add flash to make the jig even more enticing. These colors work best in clear water:

  • White
  • Silver
  • Green

Expert Tip: Choosing crappie jigs with accent colors like orange or yellow perch is also great.

Crappie Jig Color for Muddy Water

Contrast matters when fishing in muddy or stained waters because the deeper the jig goes, the more color it loses. As such, you should swap your translucent jigs with more opaque colors instead. Stick to these colors to be successful:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Purple

Expert Tip: Don’t use red-colored crappie jigs. They lose their color as the depth increases. For lightly stained waters, opaque white and chartreuse are highly recommended.

Best Crappie Jig Heads

diagram showing how a jig head is used with a plastic bait

Artificial lures must look as realistic as possible, and that’s where the jig head comes in. It is a fish hook with weighted material at or near the end of it. Its purpose is to hold the bait in a natural-looking manner to attract crappies. A crappie rig wouldn’t be complete without jig heads.

picture showing the different types of jig heads

Here are 5 of the best crappie jig heads in the market:

Roundball Jig Head

Round Head Jig Hooks, 20pcs Ball Head Fishing Hooks Unpainted Jig Heads for Bass Trout Crappie Fishing Jigs Saltwater Freshwater (1/8oz)

See on Amazon

As its name suggests, it has a round head profile. It usually comes with a smooth lead head, but some options include a plain or two-tone finish and a painted eye.

Out of all the available jig heads, many anglers prefer a roundball because it skips well for shooting docks. It is exceptional for casting and vertical jigging. This is because the rounded surface area provides a more erratic left and right action, especially when you jig it aggressively.

Like other types of jig heads for crappie, a roundball jig head comes in different weights and colors.

Pill Jig Head

Jenko Slasher Crappie Jig Head, Chartreuse, 1/4 oz

See on Amazon

Many beginners confuse a pill jig head with a roundball jig head and vice versa. But there is a distinct difference – a pill jig head has a flat bottom profile. Pill jig heads can also come unpainted with bright color combinations and a realistic 3D eye.

Minnow Jig Head

Swimbait-Jig-Head-Minnow-Fish-Head-Jig-for-Fishing (Shad 6 Pack, 3/8oz(10g))

See on Amazon

Unlike roundball and pill jig heads, it has a lead head shaped like a live minnow. Most anglers use this jig head for thinner jigs. Plus, it has a center balance point that retains the upright position of your jig, making it suitable for vertical jigging.

Like pill jig heads, you can get a minnow jig head for crappie unfinished or with eyes and gills.

Mushroom / Ned Jig Head

Reaction Tackle Shroom Jig 1/15 Black

See on Amazon

As the name suggests, this type has a mushroom-shaped head. Since it has a wider surfer area, anglers typically use it with bulkier plastic jigs. It also excels in rough fishing conditions as it keeps the bait upright and floats off the bottom.

Spinner Jig Head

XFISHMAN Crappie-Jigs-Heads-Kit 1/8 1/16 1/32oz 50 Pack Ice Fishing Jigs Lead Head Jig Hook Lure (1/16 oz, Big Eye Jigheads-W/Spinner)

See on Amazon

These jig heads are popular among anglers because they add vibration and flash to the lure. It is typically attached with a willow blade to create a more enticing action for crappies. Most anglers use a spinner jig head when trolling for crappie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Jig Head Color Matter for Crappie?

Yes, jig head color matters when catching crappies. However, it is not as important as the jig body color. We recommend sticking to the best crappie jig bait colors first before investing in painted jig heads. If you are not getting bites, then you should consider picking up colored jig heads.

Do You Use a Bobber with a Crappie Jig?

Bobbers are necessary while fishing in shallow and deep waters because they keep jigs at a good depth. Apart from that, bobbers eliminate casting problems, making crappie fishing successful. However, you should only use bobbers only when using smaller bait.

What Size Jig Head Is Best for Crappie?

The most popular jig head weight is 1/16 ounce, but some anglers opt for ⅛ ounce heads. However, you must stick to recommended sizes since jigs are usually in the upper parts of the water. For finesse applications, go for 1/64-ounce jig heads.

Crappie Jigs: Ready to Catch Some Crappies?

Crappie jigs attract hungry crappies and mimic live bait, so it’s easier for you to entice the fish to bite. Before picking up a crappie jig, make sure that you use the best color and jig head. Happy Crappie fishing!

What to Look For in Fishing Bags and Fishing Backpacks

Various factors can help you determine the best fishing backpacks. They include size, comfort, organization features, fishing-specific features, and durability.

Capacity/Size

The amount of storage space or size of the bag you need depends on the type of fishing you enjoy. It’s essential that you choose the right size of the bag as a small backpack may not hold all your tools, while a backpack that is too large can be inconvenient.

Think of all the things you will need to bring when fishing depending on the type of fish you are trying to catch. Your backpack should also have plenty of convenient pockets and compartments for easy access while fishing. The length of your fishing trip ship also guides you on the size of bag you will carry. If you are going for an afternoon session, you may not need a big bag as you carry just a few tools. However, a camping trip that will last for about a week will require carrying a big bag.

Pockets

Pockets are essential. The more pockets, the more storage options. Look for a large main component, other interior pockets, and exterior mesh pockets (to dry out faster). Some backpacks will have a designated removable pliers holder, loop for hanging things, a sunglass case, or other fishing essentials.

Waterproofing/Durability

Since you will be spending a lot of time around or on water, it is crucial that your backpack is waterproof if it falls. It also needs to be durable enough to withstand the elements, including wind, rain, snow, sleet, intense heat, and UV rays.

The interior and exterior of your backpack need to be made of water-resistant material. There are various materials, including nylon and polyester, that can protect your backpack from water. New technology and backpacks with fiber are offering superior protection against water. This will ensure that your gear and personal belongings are dry and safe inside your backpack. The backpack’s zipper should also be resistant to elements such as ice, rain, and harsh sunlight. The fasteners and zippers should also be rust and salt-resistant, especially if you fish in saltwater.

Most parts of your backpack should be able to withstand different outdoor conditions. The backpack should be made of durable materials such as reinforced fabrics, woven, or strong polyester with double stitching. A strong interior lining will ensure that the bug is strong and can contain sharp objects.

Organizational Features

Your backpack should be well-organized to help you find your stuff easily. Compartments that are easily accessible and quick to look at and get something will help save time and be organized. Make sure that the fishing backpack you choose has plenty of space for your tackle. You may consider getting a small, portable tackle box that can slide in and out of the fishing backpack easily.

Some bags also provides you with a convenient way to store your sunglasses and other accessories you may only need occasionally.

Comfort

Your backpack needs to be comfortable to carry around. If you are carrying a lot of gear, then your backpack needs to be comfortable. Padded shoulder straps will help relieve pressure from your shoulders by distributing the bag’s weight across your back, shoulders, and hips. You also won’t suffer from pains and aches after carrying a heavy backpack.

Fishing backpacks with mesh-lined straps and backs increase air circulation and keeps the backpack cool, especially on a hot day. It will also protect the sensitive contents of the bag from excessive heat.

Fishing Specific Features

Your backpack needs to hold many fishing gears like rod holders and other items such as snacks, sleeping bags, and water. It should also have compartments for hooks, fishing lines, extra reels and fish finders. Additional features like LED lighting are ideal if you love to go fishing at night. Cooling compartments also come in handy, especially when you are carrying food. A backpack with a cooling compartment will save you the hassle of carrying a separate cold storage box and prevent your food from spoiling.

What’s the Difference Between a Tackle Bag and Tackle Box

The most significant difference between tackle bags and box comes to the lightweight feature of bags. Tackle boxes were initially made from wood but later evolved to metal ones. This came with a considerable disadvantage as they suffered from rusting, which led to plastic tackle boxes. This later led to the introduction of soft bags to replace the hard box.Tackle boxes offer superior durability, waterproof and additional space through trays. On the other hand, tackle bags are more flexible, lightweight, portable, and easy to carry. Since they both have their benefits and limitations, the choice you go for depends on your preference.

These Are the Best Hawaiian Beaches to Visit in 2023

If you’re planning your dream vacation to one of the Hawaiian Islands, you probably want to know where the best Hawaiian beaches are. Whether you prefer a hotel with beachfront property or plan to spend your time snorkeling where the sea turtles are, there’s a beach in Hawaii for you.

Each Hawaiian Island has a slightly different flavor, which can play a large part in where you choose to stay. Although Hawaii is known for its gorgeous blue waters and white sand beaches, it’s essential to do a little pre-vacation planning

You don’t want to book a hotel on the wrong side of an island only to find the waves are too dangerous to swim in. It’s also good to know the best time to visit Hawaii so you’ll know what to expect at different beaches. If you’ve ever pictured yourself taking a sunset stroll on Waikiki Beach, you should know it’s one of the most crowded beaches on all the islands, especially in the summer!

Use this list of the best beaches of Hawaii to plan your perfect getaway.

Best Hawaiian Beaches in Oahu

Waimanalo Bay Beach Park

This magnificent beach is one of Oahu’s hidden gems that most tourists don’t even know about. The secluded entrance is tucked away in an area that, if you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss, and it’s not unreasonable to find you have the place all to yourself, especially on a weekday.

Waimanalo Bay is located on the southeast side of the Island of Oahu, and together with Bellows Beach next to it, you’ll find a three gorgeous mile stretch of powdery white sand and beautiful turquoise water.

During the summer months, the surf is perfect for catching some waves and boogie boarding most of the time. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park is an excellent beach for families to enjoy, especially if you like to be where it’s less crowded.

Waikiki Beach

Perhaps the most recognizable beach by name, Waikiki is famous for its long stretch of glistening white sand and beautiful blue water that attracts visitors worldwide. It’s a perfect place to spend a day surfing, swimming, sailing, or hanging out on the beach.

Since Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii is within walking distance of many hotels in the area, it’s a popular place for people to vacation without needing to rent a car. Oahu is also the least expensive of the Hawaiian islands to visit and parents can find plenty of things to do in Oahu with their kids

According to Hawaii Tourism Statistics, Oahu gets anywhere from 450,000-570,000 thousand visitors per month. That’s by far the most of any Hawaiian island. For this reason, Waikiki is a very popular–and populated–Hawaiian beach.

Ko’olina Lagoons

The four artificially made lagoons at Ko Olina are the perfect beach for families to spend the day playing. They’re so perfect Disney built the Aulani Resort there in 2011. Each lagoon has a sandy beach that gently slopes into the water, remaining shallow for several yards out.

The breakwater at the lagoons take the brunt of the ocean’s waves. This makes the water at the shoreline gentle enough for kids and beginner swimmers to enjoy playing in the water. These lagoons are clean and clear, and although there isn’t a lot of coral in the lagoons, there are plenty of colorful fish to make it a favorite place for families to snorkel.

The lagoons at Ko Olina are located about 45 minutes west of Waikiki. Parking here can be a challenge. You’ll want to get there early in the morning or head straight to the fourth lagoon since it has the most parking space.

Maui’s Best Beaches

Makena Bay

Maui has more than one jaw-dropping beach and Makena Bay, also known as Big Beach, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Its white, powdery sand extends two-thirds of a mile and is over 100 feet wide, making an incredible impression on visitors, especially those touring Hawaii for the first time.

Makena Bay Beach is a fabulous place to spend a day relaxing and enjoying time in the water. However, its waves can be rough, making it a dangerous beach for kids or beginner swimmers. This beach is best for bodyboarding, skimboarding, and body surfing. Since you’ll be spending so much time in the sun, be sure to add a UV-protecting rash guard shirt to your Hawaii packing list.

Kaanapali Beach

Imagine three miles of beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and a sunset straight out of the movies. If you can do that you’ll have a vision of what Kaanapali Beach in West Maui looks like.

Many hotels and condominiums are located in Kaanapali since it’s a fabulous stretch of beach for families to enjoy. A popular walking path connects many of the hotels and resorts lining the shore in Kaanapali.

Many people enjoy snorkeling here, especially since there’s a long stretch of relatively shallow water they can explore. It’s also not uncommon to find sea turtles in the water here, although they seldom come onshore. Kaanapali is a popular place for parasailing, jet skis, and other water excursions, including whale watching in the winter months.

Wailea Beach

Hoping to spot a celebrity on your Hawaiian vacation? You’ll up your odds by visiting Wailea Beach. Two luxury hotels, The Four Seasons Resort and the Grand Wailea, are located in this area, along with several other high-end resorts and private homes. Are those hotels out of your budget? Learn how to fly to Hawaii for free and you’ll save hundreds, even thousands of dollars that could go toward your hotel!

This beach is easily one of the most beautiful beaches Hawaii has, although it can also get crowded. It’s been known as one of America’s Best Beaches since 1999. (Source)

The best time to visit Wailea Beach is in the morning before the winds pick up. Although, if you’re not afraid of the stronger waves, you’ll have a great time playing here. It’s also an excellent beach for standup paddleboarding, kayaking, and boogie boarding.

Best Hawaiian Beaches in Kauai

Hanalei Bay

If your idea of heaven on earth is lush, green mountains sloping down to kiss the sparkling blue water, you must be dreaming of Hanalei Bay in Kauai. It ranked number one in the 2009 category for best beaches. (Source) That comes as no surprise and it’s remained mostly untouched since then.

Kauai hasn’t been overrun by the tourist industry, unlike Oahu or the Big Island of Hawaii. Nowhere is that more evident than when you’re standing on the stunning two-mile stretch of beach that makes up Hanalei Bay. When you can see so much beauty in one place–green mountains, white sand, and blue water–it’s hard to believe any vacation spot could be as picture-perfect.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, it does! Kauai is one of the least crowded Hawaiian Islands. Its population is only seven percent the size of Oahu’s so if spending a crowd-free week in paradise sounds heavenly to you, put Hanalei Bay on your agenda. It’s one of the best beaches in Hawaii!

Poipu Beach Park

Not to be outdone by Hanalei Bay, Poipu Beach Park was named America’s Best Beach by the Travel Channel. (Source) It’s easy to see why! Two crescent-shaped areas make up this impressive beach. The smaller beach is located on the left side and has calmer waters and a lifeguard. The bigger beach is on the right side and is perfect for those wanting a little more action.

Snorkelers will be dazzled by the breathtaking array of tropical fish and other sea life, proving that the underwater scene is just as exciting as the Kauai landscape is. It’s also not uncommon for endangered Hawaiian monk seals to come right up on the beach. You may also spot some green sea turtles snoozing in the sand. (As always, remember to keep your distance and don’t try to touch them.)

Kauai showcases the quieter side of Hawaii and is perfect for visitors who want to experience the beauty without the hustle and bustle of the larger islands.

Big Island of Hawaii

Kauna’oa Beach

Kauna’oa Beach, also known as Mauna Kea Beach, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. The beach is in front of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, but like all beaches in Hawaii, it’s open to the public.

During the summer months, Kauna’oa Beach is popular with families due to its calm, clear waters. You’ll also find the best snorkeling along the coral reef that lines either side of the beach. However, the stronger winds in the winter months make it a dangerous place for inexperienced swimmers.

One of the most incredible things to do on this beach is to look for Manta Rays. The hotel has floodlights that shine over the waters, which attract plankton. Mantra Rays come for feeding time, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot them from Manta Ray Point!

Green Sand Beach

This is easily one of the most unique places you will ever travel to in your life! You’ve likely heard of a black sand beach. You may have even a red sand beach, but you probably haven’t seen a green sand beach. That’s because Green Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of only four in the world. (Source

It’s located at the mouth of the bay at the site of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago. The sand gets its green color from olivine, which is lava rock that flowed thousands of years ago.

You’ll have to go on a pretty steep downhill hike to get to Papakolea Beach. (That’s the proper name of Green Sand Island.) If you’re up for the hike, you’ll be able to say you’ve seen something very few people in this world have. That’s especially true considering how far-flung the other three green sand beaches are!

Other Hawaiian Beaches Worth Mentioning

There are too many beautiful beaches in Hawaii to list them all. Frankly, what’s “best” differs depending on what you want to do there. Here are more of the best Hawaiian beaches that are also worth mentioning.

Oahu: Hanauma Bay, Sunset Beach, Alo Moana Beach, Kualoa, and Waimea Bay

Maui: Hookipa Beach, Kapalua Bay, and Hanalei Bay

Kauai: Polihale State Park, Kalapaki Beach and Kee Beach

Big Island: Hapuna Beach, Manini’owali Beach, Waikoloa Beach, and Punalu’u Beach

Whether your goal is to surf, snorkel, swim with turtles or relax on the sand, you’re sure to find the best beach in Hawaii to spend your vacation.

Best Fishing Boots and Shoes 2023

Boots and shoes are one of the most important pieces of apparel you can own when fishing. You will spend most of your time fishing on your feet, whether it’s on shore or in the water. Even if you are fishing from a boat, you will want to make sure that you have the right pair of shoes to maintain your footing on the boat and keep your feet dry should any water come in.

The kind of boots and shoes that you need while fishing depends on what type of fishing you plan on doing. If you’re shore fishing in good weather, hiking boots or athletic shoes will probably work. If you’re planning to enter the water, you’ll want rubber boots or water shoes to stay dry and keep your feet protected from rocks. Finally, if you’re on a boat, you will want quality boat shoes that have non-slip and non-marking soles. There are a number of other fishing shoes that you can use and we’ll cover them later in this guide.

In this guide, we’ll walk through the various fishing shoes you can buy. We’ll explain what they’re good for, their pros and cons, and what to look for. We’ll also provide you with recommendations for which shoes in each category are best. You will certainly want to buy more than one type of fishing shoe since some shoes are better for certain environments than others. You don’t want to be caught in a storm while shore fishing with boat shoes.

What to Look For in Fishing Shoes and Fishing Boots

Comfort

Obviously, we think that this is the most important feature. If you’re going to spend hours outdoors in these shoes, you want to make sure that they’re comfortable.  Look for fishing shoes and boots with arch support. They need to have a lot of cushioning in the midsole to provide day-long comfort and shock absorption from the waves and potential slips on rocks.

Durability and Materials

You want your fishing shoes and fishing boots to last a long time. Find shoes that have a reinforced toe and thick heel for longer-lasting shoes. With fishing boots, you can get extra protection with steel toes. EVA materials make fishing boots lighter and help absorb shock and foot fatigue. Look for shoes with neoprene or lined with fleece for extra warmth during ice fishing.

Waterproofing

If you plan to spend time in colder water, you probably want waterproof shoes. Many waders come with built-in waterproof booties, but you can also get waterproof boots of varying calf heights. These are great if you plan to only wade a little bit (up to knee-high) into the water. Otherwise, you should get waders as well. If you plan to fish in warm temperatures and are comfortable with having wet feet, a pair of water shoes or fishing shoes might be a better option especially if you’re a shore angler. Even if you don’t plan to wade, you want some water protection to keep your socks and feet dry from downpours. Waterproof shoes also make it easier to clean mud and dirt off by just spraying water and lightly brushing.

Traction

Another important feature is traction. Whether you’ll be stepping over slippery or wet rocks, standing in water, or walking on ice, you want to make sure that your fishing shoes or boots have grippy soles and have sufficient traction. Felt soles add extra traction, but some areas have banned them since felt can sometimes transport bacteria and other organisms from the water. Cleats or studs can be added to shoes as well, especially when walking on ice.

Best Wading Boots – Rubber Fishing Boots

Rubber fishing boots provide all-weather foot protection since they are both waterproof and durable enough for wading. Wading boots are a staple in any angler’s wardrobe. There are a lot of options to choose from, so choose wisely.

Height, also known as cut, plays a key role in the sorts of boots you choose. High-cut fishing boots are great for shore anglers who will frequently be in and out of the water. They can be paired with a great pair of fishing waders for maximum waterproofing. They are also great if you will be walking in wet grass since they keep your lower legs dry. While high-cut boots may seem like overkill for boat fishing or really warm days, they are almost necessary for shore anglers.

Mid-cut rubber fishing boots tend to cover the ankle and sometimes the lower calf. These tend to be preferred if you are simply looking for a pair of fishing shoes to keep your feet dry from the rain. Make sure that when you try on these mid-cut boots that your rain pants still cover them. The purpose of the rubber boots will be minimized if you still have exposed skin while wearing them.

If you’re going fishing during cooler weather, you will want to look for insulated boots. Often lined with fleece or neoprene, insulated rubber boots will keep you warm and dry while fishing.

Best Ice Fishing Boots

Ice fishing requires specialized gear. You want to keep your feet warm and dry, but also have sufficient grip to keep from slipping on the ice and snow. You can always pair ice fishing boots with ice cleats for even better traction. The best ice fishing boots are 100% waterproof and are rated for temperatures down to at least 35 degrees Fahrenheit. These boots are typically lined with fleece or neoprene to keep you warm and dry while ice fishing. Rubber soles provide durability and added traction.

 Waterproof Fishing Shoes

Waterproof fishing shoes function much the same as fishing boots, but with a much lower cut. These shoes are great for late spring to early fall while the weather is warm since they allow your feet to breathe better. Again, if you are looking to use these shoes to keep your feet dry while it rains, you will want to make sure that your rain pants cover the tops of these shoes so that water doesn’t leak in.

You’ll want to make sure that your fishing shoes come with a strong grip on the soles so that you don’t slip on rocks covered in algae. Because these shoes don’t have ankle support, you can easily twist your ankle while scrambling over rocks.

These shoes aren’t meant for colder conditions, so if you plan on going out in colder weather you might want to consider buying a pair of high-cut boots above which can provide better insulation.

Boating & Deck Shoes

If you’re going to be fishing from a boat, you’ll want a pair of boat or deck shoes. These shoes not only provide some level of water protection, they also come with anti-slip and anti-marking soles so that you can safely walk around your boat.

Most boating shoes provide plenty of cushioning in the mid-sole to absorb the shock of bouncing in waves all day. They are generally made from breathable materials, which usually contain some sort of mesh on the outside, making these shoes great for summer wear.

Boating shoes come in lots of options including both lace-up and slip-on. There are also lots of styles to choose from ranging from conservative leather to athletic.

Best Fishing Boots

Hiking boots or hunting boots can serve you quite well for fishing, especially if you will be mostly shore fishing. These are a great option if you already own a pair and don’t want to shell out for a new pair of boots. Insulated boots will serve you quite well in cold months. Look for ones that have good odor protection as well.

Most modern hiking and hunting boots are made from Gore-Tex or some other breathable, but waterproof material. This way the boots can be both sturdy and comfortable.

If you’re mostly looking to fish during the summer, a high-quality pair of mesh hiking boots will work well. However, if you plan to continue fishing late into the season, you will want to buy a pair of leather hiking boots, preferably with insulation. These will keep you warm even when the temperature drops.

Water Shoes

Water shoes are another great option for fishing. They are generally made with mesh or open sides so they provide plenty of breathability and are intended to get wet often.

These lightweight footwear options offer great cushioning and traction. They are also extremely adjustable via straps so you can find the fit that works for you. We recommend using water shoes for boat or shore fishing. If you intend to go into the water too far, we’d recommend getting the fishing shoes above since they’ll provide more protection for your feet from sharp and jagged rocks.

Sandals & Clogs

While we wouldn’t recommend sandals or clogs for any extreme fishing, they can make great shore fishing shoes provided you aren’t walking too much. Even still, we’d recommend getting a pair with straps. Thong sandals have a tendency to break and bend under while fishing.

Make sure the sandals or clogs fit properly when you buy them. If they are too big, they present a very real tripping hazard. If they’re too small, you are prone to injure your toes. To test the right size put the sandals or clogs on and tap them against a wall. If your toes touch, the sandals are too small. If they slip off easily, they are too big.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Are Fishing Shoes White?

Often designated fishing shoes will be white or have white soles in order to keep boats clean. White soles won’t rub black or darker colors off on boat surfaces.

Should Fishing Shoes Be Tall or Short?

If you plan to wade in shallow waters, we recommend getting fishing shoes or fishing boots with taller shafts since these will keep out water. For shore anglers, we recommend mid-calf cuts that stop just short of the calf.

How Do You Prevent Blisters?

We recommend buying thick socks made from wool and using sock liners to wick moisture away from your feet. This will also keep your feet free from irritation after standing for hours in the water.

As you can see there are a lot of options for fishing footwear. The important thing to keep in mind is that you want comfortable shoes since you’re going to be standing for hours and you probably want waterproof shoes in most conditions. You’ll want to make sure you have both warm and cold weather fishing shoes/boots so you’ll be prepared for any weather. Happy fishing!

Size Shows Capacity

We have dozens of winter activities in America, but ice fishing is the fourth most prevalent after ice skating, sledding, and snowmobiling. As per statistics, out of the thousands of licenses given to anglers every year, a quarter of the licensees are ice anglers. Since ice fishing anglers spend hours in frozen lakes, they will greatly benefit from a good-quality ice fishing shelter. Below outlined are high-quality and affordable ice fishing shanties you’ll surely love.

Everything About Fishing Shelter and Reasons to Get One

An icehouse protects ice anglers from weather elements while they are fishing during the freezing winter climate. They’re available as small cabins comprising several amenities or budget-friendly plastic tarpaulin with framing. A portable ice house with the right features can turn your fishing experiences into great moments of joy while offering you high levels of protection against adverse weather elements.

Choosing the Perfect Ice House: Things to Consider

As ice fishing gains traction in many parts of America, ice fish houses have become a bit popular. So should an angler consider when buying their dream portable fish house? Let’s find out.

Style

Ice angling shelters come in flip-over or hub styles. Hubs are lightweight bottomless pop-up shelters with expandable internal frames. Flip overs are heavier ice houses often allied to a sled. You can pull the sled by hand or an ATV. Flip overs have a telescoping frame and built-in chairs.

Materials and Durability

Popular ice angling houses materials include polyester, nylon, cotton, and canvas materials. The durability and strength of the ice shelter depend on the thickness and strength of the material used. Polyester and nylon materials are more durable. These shelters have solid metal frames capable of withstanding weather elements.

Quality of Ventilation

Insulating and waterproofing ice houses with thermal materials seal out cold. It also allows for easy transfer of warmth inside. Besides, insulation helps to retain most of the heat generated by the water heater. Insulating increases the weight of the ice shanty, so put that in mind when buying.

Ease of Storage and Transportation

Look for an ice fishing shanty with a compact and lightweight design. Make sure the ice house is easy to transport and store. Read product details to know if your ice shanty takes up minimal storage space. It should be easy to tow by hand or a sled.

Size and Weight

Search for a pop-up ice shanty that’s lightweight but not so big. You want a shanty that can accommodate the anglers you’ll go fishing with without burdening you with extreme weight levels. Ensure the ice shanty you purchase has enough elbow room and equipment storage space. The larger the shelter, the more room for accessories, but the heavier it is.

Budget

Your budget is the determining factor in what ice shelter to choose. That’s because ice shanties vary in price based on the size, material, and brand. Some shanty brands cost more compared to their counterparts, but the cheapest ice shelters available start from as low as $250.

Catfishing Near Me: Finding Catfish Fishing Spots Near You

If you’re wondering, “where can I go catfishing near me?” this article includes insider information on where to find the best spots—plus helpful and expert tips for successful catfishing.

What Is Catfishing?

Dead catfish on a net

Catfishing is a popular angling activity for catching various catfish species. Veteran anglers use the best catfish reels with a smooth drag and cast power due to the catfish’s fighting and pulling ability. They also use smelly cut bait like gizzard and chicken livers because catfish have a great sense of smell. Live baits like minnows and worms are also recommended for catfishing.

What Are the Best Catfish Fishing Spots?

Lakes and rivers are perfect spots to catch catfish. You can also find them in ponds and streams. But, if you want to maximize your chances of catching catfish, you should visit these good fishing locations for catfish:

Lake Tawakoni

Angler catfishing at Lake Tawakoni

Lake Tawakoni, the catfish capital of Texas, is filled with blue, channel, and flathead catfish. It is also popular for white bass and hybrid stripers.

To fish here, you must observe a minimum length of 18 inches for flathead catfish. On top of that, you must have a maximum of 5 flathead catfish in your daily bag. Also, remember to get your license if you’re above 17 years of age.

Although the lake’s maximum depth is 70 feet, it has shallow, long points with submerged trees attracting fish throughout.

Lake Fork

This big bass lake is also popular for channel cats, but you can also reel in some flatheads and blue cats. You cannot go wrong with this fishing spot since it has the best habitat features for catfish to thrive. The shoreline is natural, and Lake Fork has submerged and emergent vegetation for catfish to hide.

Like Lake Tawakoni, you will need a fishing license. There are also other fishing regulations:

CatfishDaily Bag Limit
Channel and blue catfish25. Only 10 if 20 inches or more
Flathead catfish5, with 18-inch minimum length

Mississippi River

Are you thinking of spots for catfishing near me? The Mississippi River is the perfect spot. This river has one of the largest freshwater fish, the blue catfish.

Here, expect to catch catfish weighing up to 100 pounds. However, observe these guidelines:

  • Channel and blue catfish – Possession and a daily limit of 20
  • Flathead catfish – Daily and possession limit is 10

Many reservoirs make the Mississippi a favorite for many anglers because they’re a good catfish habitat. Plus, many other fish species, like striped bass, paddlefish, and bighead carp, are common in the Mississippi.

Reelfoot Lake

Reelfoot lake is a good spot for catfish, but yellow bass is in abundance here too. The lake has excellent pockets of aquatic vegetation thanks to its average depth of 5.5 feet. So you won’t have an issue catching large channels and flatheads. However, you must have a special lake permit to access the five public boat ramps for your fishing boats.

Catfish is a popular fish here, but you’ll also enjoy catching the following at this lake:

  • Black crappie
  • Yellow bullhead

Santee Cooper Lakes

Photo of Santee Cooper Lakes

Catfishing in these lakes is among the best in the country. You’ll find white, blue, flathead, and channel catfish all year round. Besides, these lakes are deep, making the water perfect for catching 20-pounders – a good size for trophy catfish! In fact, anglers caught the world’s biggest channel catfish in 1964

You don’t need a state fishing license. Instead, a permit from the General Store is enough.

Lake Lavon

Lake Lavon is famous for crappie and bass fishing, but you can also get the channel and blue catfish. Besides, Lake Lavon has the perfect depth, shallow flats, and small creek channels – features that make it exciting and fun to catch big catfish.

So, if your “catfish farm near me” search is unsuccessful, grab your gear and head to Lake Lavon. Still, remember to observe statewide bag and length limits

Osage and Missouri Rivers

These rivers have monster channels and blue and flathead catfish. They are also home to walleye, white bass, and spotted bass. Besides, the deep holes and open waters are best for sport fishing. However, remember that the daily limit of channel and bluefish is 20 and 10 for the flathead. Also, you need a fishing license.

Where to Go Catfishing Near Me?

an angler fishing at a catfishing spot.

Looking for the best catfishing near me spots? Fortunately, catfish are common in many water sources, like reservoirs and bottom channels. Look for these areas when catfishing:

Bottom Channels and Ditches

Bottom channels and ditches are perfect because of their prominent or subtle drops. Look at features such as cuts in the bank or brush piles to find spots for catfishing near me.

In the daytime, catfish move toward the deeper waters. However, they do the opposite at night, so anchor correctly to take home a good catch.

Inundated Lakes and Ponds

Inundated ponds and lakes are excellent because catfish move to deep waters to hide and shallow waters to feed. Use sound navigation to locate points, sunken islands, or humps. These spots attract catfish. However, watch out for tree stumps while fishing.

Reservoirs

These man-made lakes favor catfish because they have varied habitats. They are also deep enough for you to catch catfish. It is easy to spot a reservoir by finding drop-offs, peninsulas, or rock piles. These areas are catfish hotspots.

Riprap

These large rocks placed to prevent erosion attract forage animals and provide cover for large catfish. When fishing, look for big boulders changing to smaller rocks. Also, underwater points created by slides of rocks are indicators of this location.

Underwater Humps

These humps are mostly near deep water. Here, fish have enough cover and enough food to grow large. For efficiency, use sonar technology to find suitable fishing zones for cats.

Outside River Bends

These bends are dark and hollow. Logs, fallen trees, and debris accumulate in these spots, so you cannot miss them while fishing. Catfish hide from their prey in the undercuts, making feeding easier.

Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus): The Complete Guide

Many fish species grace the oceans, rivers, and ponds, but none matches the tarpon’s fighting ability. Anglers call this gamefish “silver king” due to its strength, stamina, and pulling power. Aside from that, it has a majestic appearance, validating its nickname.

Keep reading to discover more about this Florida premier gaming fish.

What Is a Tarpon Fish?

Tarpon fish, also known as silver king, is a slow-growing gamefish that matures at 7-13 years of age. It is a nearshore sportfish. So, you must go beyond the beaches, bays, and offshore drop-offs to catch this resilient fish. Unfortunately, the IUCN recently classified this gamefish as vulnerable.

Anglers know this fish for its fighting abilities, which make it difficult to catch. It also has excellent stamina and will put up a fight whenever you try to catch it.

Where Are They Found

Tarpon fish do well in shallow salty and fresh water. You’ll find freshwater tarpon in the Gulf of Mexico, river mouths, landlocked canals, shallow coastal waters, and estuaries. However, older tarpon snook is common in rivers too.

If you live in the southeastern part of the United States, go to the fish capital, Boca Grande, in Florida. Still, you can only do recreational tarpon fishing here since this species is not a table fish.

What Do They Look Like

This fish is hard to miss due to the shiny silver color of its sides and belly. Its back is dark green to gray. Another unique feature of this fish is its dorsal and anal fins, which have an elongated ray that forms a threadlike projection that trails behind the Atlantic tarpon.

If you’re wondering how this fish survives in bays (and low-oxygen habitats), its swim bladder connects to its throat. As a result, it gulps in the air directly to the blood to prevent suffocation. As expected, tarpons are huge (thus their popularity in sports fishing). However, the males are smaller than the females.

Surprisingly, they have tiny, densely-packed teeth despite their large size. These teeth are all over the mouth, covering the tongue and jaw. These teeth shouldn’t worry you, though. A tarpon’s bite cannot hurt you.

Fun Fact: In 2003, Max Domecq caught a 286-pound 9 ounces tarpon, setting the all-tackle world record.

What Does Tarpon Eat?

Juvenile tarpon is planktivorous, meaning they feed on zooplankton, but adults are strictly carnivorous. However, don’t be surprised to see young fish feeding on insects and small fish from time to time. Adults, on the other hand, hunt small mid-water fish, like sardines and anchovies.

They also love to feed on the following:

  • Shrimp
  • Crabs
  • Larger crustaceans
  • Dead fish
  • Squid

Fun Fact: Tarpon fish swallow their prey whole since they cannot chew due to their villi-like teeth.

How Does Tarpon Reproduce

Female giant tarpon lays about 12 million eggs. Reproduction occurs when female tarpons release the eggs and sperm into the water through broadcast spawning. Once fertilization occurs, the eggs float to the water’s surface and look like transparent ribbons. This appearance is convenient for keeping predators away from the eggs.

This fish species only spawns offshore in secluded and warm areas. So, if you’re interested in seeing this, visit their habitats in late spring to late summer on a full moon.

FAQ

When Is Tarpon Season?

You can catch tarpons all year round, but the best time for tarpon fishing in Florida is April through June. At this time, the water temperatures are 75 degrees Fahrenheit and above.

Is Tarpon Safe to Eat

Tarpons are edible. However, they are rare fish on restaurant menus or stores. Also, the fish is on the bony side, which many fish-eaters dislike.

Can You Keep a Tarpon if You Catch It?

You can keep one fish for state or world trophies. Still, you must pay $50 per fish per tag.

However, the most preferred method of fishing tarpon is catch and release due to its vulnerable conservation status.

How to Hook a Tarpon?

Tarpon fish resilience and their bony mouths make them difficult to hook. Still, the best hooking trick is sharpening the 5/0 hooks to allow the point to stick. Lures like jigs and spoons also help catch tarpons. Finally, it would help if you also used live bait like crabs, mullets, shrimp, and pinfish.

The Silver King

Tarpons are well-loved gamefish because their stamina makes sportfishing more challenging.

So, consider going tarpon fishing the next time you’re in Florida. Ensure your hooks are sharp and your trip falls between April and June. Happy tarpon fishing!
